The GridIron Gurus Fantasy Football League Charter
The GridIron Gurus Fantasy Football League was founded by Joe Hutchison. It is different and unique from any other fantasy football league. Just like you don't have to be a master mechanic to drive a car, you don't have to know every policy or rule, or how and why each one came to be, to play here and do well and have fun. All you need is 5 minutes or so per week with Internet access, and an understanding of the four cornerstone principles that, over a decade, have helped this league evolve. This is a highly competitive points-based league based on production and not just touchdowns, with only ten roster spots per team and a limited number of teams, always eight or fewer.
  1. The GridIron Gurus Fantasy Football League is, and will always remain FREE!
  2. There are no bench spots in this league. You must manage your team all 17 weeks or pay "penalties."
  3. There is no player hoarding, and no trades in this league. No one can help, or hurt you.
  4. This is an active manager's league, meaning there are stiff penalties assessed for not keeping one's roster full of active and productive players. This is possible due to the large pool of available talent on the free agency and waiver wires.
It is also unique as a points-based league in the sense that it features a playoff apparatus consisting of the top three managers from the regular season in a playoff round that actually takes place during and throughout the NFL playoffs featuring additional supplemental drafts. No other known public league is even remotely similar. Since negative or poor play is so highly penalized in this league it has become necessary to distinguish between truly negative play or performance and ineffectual, insignificant, or incorrectly assessed poor play. To this end the following policies have been established to make sure players are not inadvertently and over-penalized.

(1) The "Active Manager Reimbursement Policy":
...Active (participatory) managers can apply for "reimbursement" of points lost from fumbles through the message board using ANY "recovered" fumble(s) to offset his own fumble(s), but may not profit from same. This policy has been implemented to correct an inability in the Yahoo settings to discern between a truly negative play (fumble) and a simple loss of control whereby a player reestablishes control of the ball, or makes up for a fumble by recovering one even if it is another players' fumble. Fumbles can be found at your team's page and the NFL's site. But to see if a player was credited with a recovered fumble you'll need to look at the full box score at NFL.com. Click on that game, then the "Analyse" tab for the complete box score which shows ALL the game stats including fumbles and recovered fumbles.
...Managers can also apply for reimbursement of points for any Touchdown (6 points) given up by "special teams" only, namely kickoff, punt, and blocked and other kick returns. This policy has been implemented to correct an inability in the Yahoo settings to correctly discern between a team defense and negative special teams play.
Notes: Extra points do not apply to this change, and managers must apply for these points through the Yahoo message board prior to the first kickoff of the following week or by 7 AM Tuesday morning following week 17.
(2) The "NO Points Policy":
Any roster spot on a "bye" week, "inactive" status, "injured reserve" (IR), or otherwise scoring less than one point earns a 1000 point penalty, deducted from that week's score by the commissioner. This penalty includes players who score negative points in a game, as negative point totals certainly equate to negative play. You can "keep" a valued "franchise" player if he is on a bye week or injured, but must pay this penalty to do so. This is an "active" manager's league, not a "spectator" league.
This rule applies to all roster spots except team defenses and kickers, who are exempt.

Also:
Our scoring system's goal is to have starters average benchmark at 1000 points times 10 positions = 10,000 point weeks. But BIG penalties for negative or poor play (INTs, Fumbles, Missed FGs, Points Allowed, inactive or unproductive players, etc.) are in place and will help offset great performances by other players. The goal is to have the potential for MASSIVE point ranges based on opportunities and production versus negative play with that range straddling the zero mark - with a potential of big swings in scoring per week as well. So poor performances, UNintended zeros (midgame injury) and "protection byes" will really sting now and should "cost" about 1000 points per week. Roster spots (other than K or D) that earns zero points for the week (or less), intentionally or not, draws an additional 1000 point penalty. So protect "franchise" players with caution. This is an "active" manager's league, not a "spectator" league.

League Rules:
Regular Season:
There is only ONE RULE in the regular season; there is NO BENCH.

There are policies, new, long established, and potentially in future that reenforce this lone rule. This is an "active" manager's league, not a "spectator" league. Specifically, a manager MAY NOT deactivate (bench) any position on your roster. Your roster MUST - AT ALL TIMES - contain the prescribed roster positions, ALL in activated (non-benched) status. Also, you may not have a player on your roster who is on Injured Reserve (IR). Since this player cannot return to active status for the remainder of the season, this constitutes a violation of the no bench rule. You may however have a player on your roster who has been declared inactive for a week or even weeks by his NFL team as his status to eventually return is possible at some point. This is in effect like a bye or multiple byes and is allowed.
The penalty (penalties) for violating this one rule are severe! In the event your roster is EVER in violation of this rule the commissioner reserves the right to penalize said team/manager as s/he sees fit. S/he may (without notice) deactivate (bench) ALL the players in the affected position group (WRs, RBs, etc.) and thereby zero out ALL SCORING for those affected positions. The penalty will be as severe as possible (beyond zeroing out the highest scorer in that position) to deter player hoarding or locking out a player from other managers. In other words if you drop your Kicker and have 4 RBs, the commissioner will zero out (bench) ALL FOUR RB scores! - SO COMPLY! If a Kicker or Defense is benched the highest scorer for the week may be benched by the commissioner or benching the Defense the following week may be an option - whichever is more severe. To reiterate: the commissioner reserves the right to penalize said team/manager as s/he sees fit. To avoid this keep your roster legal at all times!
Other than this one rule (and the policies explained here that help enforce same), you are limited only by the Yahoo settings. The Commissioner is merely another manager in the league. However, the Commissioner may opt to help any manager with any Yahoo shortcoming, glitch, or otherwise error including but not limited to games at special times or days (Thursday games for example that may affect waiver rights, etc.) where "normal" Yahoo actions are impaired (for example if their sight is "down" and you want to make a transaction via a timestamped email, message post, or phone call to the commissioner).
NOTE: Yahoo may change a players (and thereby a Manager's) point totals throughout the week. Changes made after Tuesday Morning 7:00 A.M. after week 17 that affect final league standings will not be allowed, and will be reversed by the Commissioner to preserve the league's standings and playoff spots.
NOTE on Posting through the Yahoo Message Board: The Commissioner reserves the right to block a manager from posting to the message board or dumping one's roster (quitting, dropping players) at his discretion. This does NOT prohibit rudeness, trash-talking, cursing or other 'offensive' language as such is encouraged and is generally only done in extreme cases to prevent abuses or protect the integrity of the league and/or league standings. However, posts should pertain to the league and league business, the NFL and its players, league rosters, strategies, or any other league affiliated information or business. The board is not for endless personal attacks or rhetoric between managers that have nothing to do with the league or anything related to it. Use your myspace or personal blogs pages, messaging services, or personal emails for said traffic. Please don't crowd the message board with irrelevant postings. Repeat offenders may be temporarily blocked from using the message board and that could limit necessary communications - so don't do it.

League Playoff Rules:
Playoff drafts are tenatively scheduled for Thursday nights at 10:00 PM Central Time but may be altered to accomodate participants.
Why have Rules? The newest changes, and/or critical info is usually in bold or red text...
Since our league's playoffs are internally controlled by us and not by Yahoo (only way to have our playoffs during the NFL playoffs) there have to be, unfortunately, some rules. If one is unclear or confused by these rules one has all season to clarify same through the commissioner's office. Each rule has a purpose and all rules primary aim is to satisfy the league's prime directive - to create a fair and evenly balanced playing field among active and skilled managers utilizing no bench. Those of you that have been here a while surely remember the reason(s) when rules were added. For example: combining the no drops and no moves on gameday policies prevent managers from dropping players minutes before a game . The no-bench/deactivation policies prevent managers from overdrafting roster spots or having but not playing players to horde them and keep them from other managers (the Trigun Rule). These policies all combined mean a manager does not need Internet access 5 minutes before each and every game to pick up players dropped at the last minute. The constant tinkering with the scoring module combined with the primary no-bench rule is designed to promote activeness by making it costly to keep (bench-ing) players with injuries or byes and minimize "coattailing". Still, if anyone has any question as to why a certain rule exists, I will be happy to explain with a reply. Or just post your query to the Yahoo message board; others will probably explain before I can.
The
Playoffs (postseason) begin Tuesday Morning 7:00 A.M. after week 17. Any scoring changes posted by Yahoo that affect final league standings after this deadline will not be allowed, and will be reversed by the Commissioner to preserve the league's standings and playoff spots.
The regular season champion automatically qualifies; the second and third place teams are invited to participate via the message post board provided they have met "active" status requirements as determined by the commissioner and may possibly require acceptance of the invitation via the message post board.  If a manager is more than 15 minutes late to the initial playoff draft, s/he will be replaced by the highest seeded alternate present at the draft.
Before the initial playoff draft begins each participant must post that s/he has read and understands ALL the playoff rules. In this way if a manager makes an error and incurs a penalty or misses an opportunity, s/he has no defense.

You alone are ultimately responsible for you roster and scores. It is highly recommended YOU calculate and post your own scores within 48 hours of the end of the final game of the round, or the commissioner will post a score for you. You may challenge the accuracy of any manager-posted score within 48 hours of those postings. If the commissioner has to post your score for you, you lose all challenge and appeal rights. All scoring is calculated using  official NFL.com statistics which may vary from Yahoo (or other) statistics. For example Yahoo defines a "lost" fumble as one the opposing team recovers as in a turnover. But the NFL defines a "lost" fumble as one in which a player losses possession and is recovered by any other player, even from the same team, and not necessarily a turnover. Other discrepancies may exist. The NFL.com website has made errors before but has always corrected them within a few hours or by the next morning. Any score may be challenged only via a post through the Yahoo message board. All challenges must be made prior to the first selection of the next draft round and must contain a breakdown of statistics and point totals and will be checked by the commissioner. Challenges to scoring in the Super Bowl must be made within 24 hours after the conclusion of the game. If a challenge is upheld the points will be corrected.
No Auto draft is acceptable (the Insider Information Rule - if the Commissioner is in the playoffs said information may provide him an unfair advantage). If one experiences Internet problems and/or for some reason cannot attend the initial draft, another manager or the commissioner may act as a proxy (i.e. via telephone) for selections but ONLY after verifying this via a phone call, email, or message post to the commissioner before the playoff draft begins, thus the 15 minute delay grace period. If one has no Internet access, email access, or phone call access, then one WILL miss the opportunity to participate and be replaced by the next highest seed present, with that one (1) Championship Series Manager Point redirected to the participating alternate.
The initial draft will not begin until all the participants have posted their "I have read and understand the rules" post AND the commissioner posts "Begin the draft." Each manager has a 3 minute time limit to make a selection. At the end of 3 minutes if no selection is made the commission will then post for the next manager to make his or her next selection. In the past the Commissioner has been lenient with this time limit but should he actually post for the next manager to make the next selection, such an action IS FINAL (no exceptions - no "wait, wait, I pick so and so posts). It is advised the next selector wait or at least make sure the previous pick is obviously legal and has been allowed and verified to make sure one's own attempted pick does not tip one's hand should that previous pick be deemed invalid or unacceptable.

As in the regular season there is no bench (The Golden Rule).

There are no Trades (the Leeboy Rule; eliminates helping other managers and potential proxy teams).
All players are eligible for any point totals, although a lot of scoring is position specific. Just like Yahoo's regular season settings if a RB throws a TD pass he gets those points. However, statistics (reception, rushing attempt, yardage, INT, fumble, etc.) do not count on two-point conversions (per NFL official stats) - only the points for a successful 2-pt. conversion are awarded. This is not a new rule but is included here for clarification.

Drops:
Players from losing teams are automatically removed from your roster. You may drop any PLAYER (except kickers and team defenses) for any reason (matchup/injury) ONLY at the beginning of the 3 supplemental draft rounds BEFORE the first selection is made.
But you must do so before you post you are ready to begin the draft. You may never drop any player during or after the draft(s) for any reason; however you may pick up (add) ANY player ANY time BEFORE the DATE of that weekend's FIRST game through the post message board at the Yahoo web site provided you have an opening on your roster. These restrictions help assure a manager does not use his picks to "hoard" or 'lock out' a player from other managers.
Note:

The Kicker and Team Defense roster spots may not be dropped. By drafting or adding these volatile position(s) you assume their full risk-vs-reward potential as long as they win and remain on your roster. Team Defenses that are charged with 21 or more points are not eligible for 'supplimental' scoring points as defined in the playoff scoring module shown below. Also, the "Kicker" position is a roster specific position, not a player specific position. ALL kicks by that Kicker's team count toward your totals. A more accurate draft or add claim would read "place kickers - ATL." You of course retain the option of not initially drafting, or ever adding any roster spot, including either or both of these.

You may not inactivate (bench) a roster spot (the Trigun Rule).

You may not have a player on your roster who is on Injured Reserve (IR). Since this player cannot return to active status for the remainder of the season, this constitutes a violation of the no bench rule. You may however have a player on your roster who has been declared inactive for a week or even weeks by his NFL team as his status to eventually return is at least technically deemed possible at some point. This is in effect like a bye or multiple byes and is allowed.
There are no waivers; all players not on an active roster are Free Agents, including those dropped at the opening of the supplemental drafts.

* Playoff Drafting:
Unlike the regular season initial draft, the initial playoff draft round goes by successive seeding (1,2,3,1,2,3,etc. till conclusion) and officially ends once all three participants have "passed" in succession, or selected all 10 appropriate roster spots. One may "pass" in one round of a draft, then pick in the next cycle but be advised that three consecutive passes or non-picks officially ends any draft round - at which time managers are free to pick players at will and without sequence until the add deadline This could lead to a free-for-all and be a mess and any posts made during such melee are official, so be advised and be careful not to pass without thinking. In the initial playoff draft it is recommended (but not mandatory) all roster spots be filled.
If you wait till the last possible moment to add player(s) to your roster (say in an effort to avoid an injury or no-start) you run the risk of not filling your roster. Imagine a  manager adding picks up to the deadline via message board post, email or phone not knowing someone else had already added that player moments earlier, then time lapsing with a hole in your roster. Avoid any such confusion on the busiest opening round by filling your roster in the initial draft. Players facing a bye are allowed and will of course score a zero (0) in the initial round. The second round draft goes by successive seeding (2,3,1,2,3,1,etc. till conclusion) and officially ends once all three participants have posted a comment stating they are finished - or three consecutive passes or non-picks are made. The third round draft goes by successive seeding (3,1,2,3,1,2,etc. till conclusion) and officially ends once all three participants have posted a comment stating they are finished - or three consecutive passes or non-picks are made.
Note: It is assumed seeded managers wish to use this format in player selections; however, one may opt to select differently. For example the #1 seed (regular season champ) may wish to draft first in the second or third round but must make such claim at any time after the conclusion of the regular season up until the beginning of the initial playoff draft only through a post on the message board and is final - no exceptions! - as changing then changing back may affect another manager's strategy. In other words, and by seeding priority, a manager can select which round s/he wishes to pick first. In that event, the picking order for those rounds are simply swapped. However, in the final round (Super Bowl) the lowest scoring team in the playoffs has first pick, followed by the second team, and finishing with the team in first place in the playoffs. This final round's selections are not by seeding but by scoring to that point - inversely (last to first).

You are allowed nine (9) supplemental picks (and/or adds) collectively in ALL rounds after the initial draft has been completed. After any draft you may pick up (add) ANY player ANY time BEFORE the DATE of that weekend's FIRST game through the post message board at the yahoo web site provided you have an opening on your roster. This method is timestamped and considered final. There is a maximum limit of four (4) picks (including adds) per round. Transactions must have a prior date to gameday on my computer. Are you smart enough to figure out this timeline involves the midnight hour - my time?  At this time I will try to post a "Rosters Frozen" message but it is up to you to make sure any such time issue does not come into play, so don't try to wait until the last minutes or seconds (the Pulpman Rule). ANY ADD constitutes a pick. Only adds and supplemental playoff round picks constitute a "pick." One may opt to not fill a roster spot during a draft so he or she may add a player after the draft but before the add deadline. In other words, one may add a player up to the deadline but may not drop a player to add one. Notice there is no method by which one may wait until the last minute (on gameday) to add a player to avoid a no-start, injury replacement, or other roster change. When you draft or add a player you assume said risk automatically. You do however have the option of not picking a questionable player (or roster spot) at the draft then adding same before the deadline if you wish - but you may not drop a player or roster spot to make room for any such add.

NO draft pick or add is recognized or allowed without full first and/or last names, team affiliation, and position specified in the post - incorrect spelling is irrelevant with said information in the post. Draft "L.T." and I will recognize Lawrence Tynes - K - KC, and the next player may draft that RB for San Diego. Let's call this one the Robbie Rule. "L.T. - RB - SD" is not acceptable; "L.Tomlinson - SD - RB" is acceptable. Call it the Adrian Peterson Rule (2 such names in the NFL - both RBs, or the CINN-Johnson Rule - they have like 8 Johnsons on their roster with several having the same initials - so at least one name, first or last, must be included with your selection. In the CIN example a first and last name would be advisable). The Commissioner need not "approve" every selection for the draft to continue. If a selection is obviously legal (example: Brady - QB - NE) the next player may proceed without fear. But if in doubt (examples: "A. Peterson - RB"; or "Johnson - QB - TB" [they had two one year]) the next selector may opt for verification before proceeding. Suppose CHI or MIN had made the playoffs and the other had not? Maybe you're an idiot and didn't know. Trigums is gone; let's let the childish BS part with him and make the draft an easy and professional process.
.
Playoff Scoring Module
For the playoffs a new simplified scoring module has been implemented. This will make keeping up with your scores and your opponent's scores much easier. Managers have nine (9) supplemental playoff picks. There is a maximum limit of four (4) adds and/or supplemental draft picks per manager per round. As always 'drops' are only allowed at the beginning of and prior to each supplemental draft round. Scoring is position specific unless otherwise noted. Managers are highly encouraged to post their own scores through the Yahoo message board within 48 hours after the last game. Forty eight hours after the end of the final game of the round,  posted scores are considered final. Challenges made by opposing managers to another managers' score, within 48 hours of the score posting, and before the first pick of any next draft, that are upheld, are corrected by the commissioner. The commisioner monitors all scores and will post scores for other managers that choose, or fail, to post their own, with no review or appeal options for the un-posting manager.
The Kicker and Team Defense roster spots may not be dropped. By drafting or adding these volatile position(s) you assume their full risk-vs-reward potential as long as they win and remain on your roster. The "Kicker" position is a roster specific position, not a player specific position. ALL kicks by that Kicker's team count toward your totals. A more accurate draft or add claim would read "place kickers - ATL." You of course retain the option of not initially drafting, or ever adding any roster spot, including either or both of these.
Playoff Scoring:

With the exception(s) noted above the regular season settings hold true and are listed above. What to do, what to do.  Decide on a strategy, and Good Luck!
